Jaguar Pride, County-Wide

The phone rang. The only person there to answer was none other than basketball coach and social studies teacher Jeffrey Stohr. On the other side of the conversation was a representative of the Palm Beach County high school All-Star basketball team, who was in need of talented players. At the end of the conversation two things became final, the All-Star team had found all of the players they needed and,  for the first time in Dreyfoos history, we had sent players to the Palm Beach County basketball All-Star game.

Communications senior Munashe Kwangwari and Visual Senior Jordan Oregero are both starters for the Dreyfoos basketball team and have now gotten a chance to participate in the Palm Beach County All-Star game, in which only the best 15 players from around the county are chosen to do. They were selected by a board of coaches throughout the county who then called Mr. Stohr to finalize their choices.

“I had a coach call me about an All-Star team and he told me that they had two spots open and that he was thinking of [Kwangwari] and [Oregero],” Mr. Stohr said.

This season Kwangwari was chosen to be All Conference MVP and was also the leading scorer for the Jaguars, but was humbled by the players that he played next to on the All-Star team.

“I feel like I was picked because I’m a team leader and I am able to control the team when we are on the court but when you practice with players from around the county you realize you are not the best,” Kwangwari said “Everyone is their own leader, and there isn’t anyone trying to take control.”

Oregero is the starting center for the Jaguars and is the tallest player on the All-Star roster for this year. He focuses on defense and is able to average 5 blocks a game during the regular season.

“I don’t really score points, I’m a good defensive player and I hustle on the court,” Oregero said.

The All-Star team was only given two practices before their game against Miami-Dade County which was on March 8th at Palm Beach Lakes. They were able to practice Tuesday and Thursday of last week, being able to meet the players and coaches to build chemistry before they played.

“I feel that two practices are enough for the team because we get how each other play and we all just want to win,” Oregero said “It was hard playing with top scorers but its nice playing with kids who are competitive and have the same mindset as you.”

The team was made up of students from Wellington Christian, Boca Christian, Dreyfoos, Trinity Christian and Lake Worth Christian. Although these players are spread from all over the county they were able to get together during the two practices and turn what looked like a random selection of basketball players into an efficient team.

“The practices were intense, we scrimmaged public schools and we looked good.” Kwangwari said.

Sending Kwangwari and Oregero to play in the All-Star team this year is another Dreyfoos first that the basketball team has been able to pull off and will not be long before they can achieve another accomplishment.
