Dreyfoos students decked in blue, green, red, and black and gold flooded into the gym for a highly anticipated Pep Rally on Jan. 29. Each grade had the chance to showcase their talents and compete against the other grades during numerous competitions. Some events in the Pep Rally, such as the dance, had been worked on for weeks or months prior to the Pep Rally.

“The choreographers  [for the junior pep rally dance] worked really hard and I think they did a really good job,” dance junior Jaden Murphy said.

Each grade had a theme that was incorporated into the Pep Rally in multiple ways. The freshman theme was “Pixar,” the sophomore theme was “Money,” the junior theme was “American Horror Story,” and the senior theme was “Star Wars.” Classes used their respective themes in aspects of their song, dance, and teacher dress-up.

The Pep Rally started out with a musical chairs competition. The juniors won first place and continued to do well in the Pep Rally, especially during teacher dress-up. Seniors also excelled, treating the audience with their a cappella performance and dance.

“I was really impressed by the senior dance, but I was also really impressed by the freshman dance,” vocal senior Abbie O’Donnell said. “This Spirit Week was fantastic.”

Sophomores and freshmen did well, impressing students in the free throw competition and the dance competition, respectively. Sophomores placed third overall for Spirit Week and freshmen placed fourth. After a close competition the whole week, seniors came out on top to win Spirit Week.

“The Pep Rally was kind of overwhelming but it was really fun,” visual freshman Jill Rooney said. “It was better than any other Pep Rally I’ve ever been to. Overall, I really liked all of Spirit Week.”

Shortly after the seniors left the gym, Principal Susan Atherley was knocked down during the transition ceremony, during which the underclassmen move to the section on the bleachers they will be at next year. When the sophomores ran across the gym to their new section, Dr. Atherley fell during the onslaught. Dr. Atherley had no serious injuries, however, and spoke on the announcements during third hour to let all students and faculty know that she was okay.

“I hope Dr. Atherley is okay,” theatre sophomore Maddie Wood said. “I think the sophomores were really excited and really did not mean for Dr. Atherley to be hurt, but I think that even though this incident happened the Pep Rally was still amazing.”
