Piano junior Eva Basnet placed second at Florida’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Student Leadership Conference (SLC) in epidemiology, the study of diseases and health in populations, qualifying her to advance to the International Leadership Conference.
For the first time, the school had competitors attend the SLC: Basnet and digital arts & photography sophomore Natalie Ngan, who, as a part of courtesy corps, volunteered throughout the event.
For Basnet to qualify for the international competition, her event required her to complete a 50 question test within an hour and to write a brief essay. Competitors with the top three scores moved on.
“It was quite a lot of studying,” Basnet said. “I had to look at the World Health Organization’s infectious diseases and look at their symptoms and causes. It makes you feel very accomplished. It makes me happy knowing that I was able to represent the school in a positive light.”
