Snapchat Adds New Ways to See Yourself-ie

Snapchat’s recent update features different lenses to morph the appearance of selfies with crazy eyes, scary demons, hearts, and much more. Snapchat has also added more emojis to describe specific relationships between two users.

Snapchat surprised users on Tuesday, Sept. 15, when it released its recent update. Before clicking the button in the Apple Store to download the new edition, Snapchat gives a small hint of its changes. “Before taking a selfie, press and hold on your face for a surprise!” The new update allows users to apply Lenses, which are similar to filters. Lenses alter faces before taking a photo or video. There are heart eyes, cartoon eyes, a rainbow mouth, and more. Along with the Lenses are Trophies, located above the camera when swiping up. These can be unlocked as one advances through snapchat and earns achievements. Every new Trophy is a surprise since the Trophies’ names remain locked until users achieve a certain level.

At last, Snapchat awards teens for taking photos of themselves.

Before the update, Snapchatters could replay just one snap a day. But for most people, this is not enough to account for the abundance of snaps that go unacknowledged. The new update allows users to replay more than one a day if they’re willing to spend 99 cents for three. If money is available and an urge to see a four second snap of a cat again seems like justified reason for the price, users should take advantage of this new feature.

This new update for Snapchat brings a new way to experience yourself-ie. From Lenses to expenses, the Snapchat gods have finally rewarded us for our vanity.

Communications junior Marianna Kaimakliotis is a second-year staffer on The Muse. Kaimakliotis is the Assistant Layout Editor this year. She loves graphic design, layout, creative writing, and music, but filmmaking is the largest part of her life. She hopes to become a director/screenwriter in the future, and to incorporate the aspect of creating something both visually and mentally stimulating, like a magazine layout, into the rest of her art.
