Annual Building 9 Summer Art Show success

The Summer Art Show was held on Sept. 3 from 4 P.M to 6 P.M. It displayed the pieces that visual and digital media students worked on during the summer. The show exhibited an array of artwork using different mediums, from ink prints to photography.

Visual junior Jailine Cano did a black ink rubber cut print portraying headless female dolls. She takes inspiration from Lauren Youngsmith, an artist who uses a minimalist black and white color scheme. Cano enjoys how Youngsmith incorporates octopuses, organic shapes, and the female figure in her work.

“It really inspires me because I want to do the same thing, but add my own personal style. I like to go for a dreamlike look, and it gives the audience a reason to look at it. I want to be different in my work, I want people to look at it and think ‘Oh, that’s Jailene’s work,’” Cano said.

Visual sophomore Allie Taylor painted an elaborate night sky scene on her twin sister Brielle’s face. The scene took her 30 minutes using acrylic paint, and was photographed for presentation.

“I was on Tumblr and I saw a girl who photoshopped a sunset onto her entire body, so I thought ‘Why don’t I do that to Brielle and actually paint it?’” Taylor said.

Many of the summer pieces are still on display in building nine.

About the Contributor
Mary Rasura
Mary Rasura, Features Editor
Communications junior Mary Rasura has had a love of journalism ever since her parents made it a point to watch the 5 PM. news. She is the Features Editor and feels the section will be a great fit for her. She believes Dreyfoos wouldn't be what it was without the arts, and is excited to report on this vital part of the school’s ecology. Rasura enjoys creative writing as well, and finds truth and fiction to be equally compelling narratives. In her free time, she loves political satire and likes to watch the Daily Show and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. She loves having flowers in her room and believes they brighten up any work space. She is an active member of the Women’s Empowerment Club and plans on joining the Speech and Debate team, as she has discovered a love of speech in the past year and wishes to improve her rhetoric. In the future, Mary wishes to work at a news magazine and would love to review theater shows.
