Super Food: Salmon

Living in South Florida seafood is a common food for people to enjoy whether it’s dinner or lunch especially as the weather warms up with the summer months approaching. While some common seafood, such as tuna, can contain high amounts of mercury, which can be potentially hazardous to one’s health, salmon is a safe and healthy alternative. Salmon is one of the healthiest fish for people to consume because of its high content of omega-3 fats, vitamin D and selenium, each of which have their own powerful health benefits.

1.Cancer Prevention
Vitamin D has been proven to play a crucial role in lowering the risk of several types of cancer. Because the fish contains high levels of vitamin D and selenium, they are effective against the blood cell or lymph cell-related cancers, such as breast, prostate and leukemia.

2.Eye Health
It is a well known fact that fish oil is effective in improving vision. The omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon combat both macular degeneration and chronic dry eye. These omega-3 fatty acids prevent dry eye by alleviating inflammation. Servings of salmon regularly can lead to eye improvement.

3.Skin and Hair Health

Salmon can also lead to a large improvement in ones hair and skin health. Not only does the omega-3 fatty acids lead to younger and flawless looking skin, but it also can make your hair shine more. Omega-3s provide nourishment to hair follicles helping hair grow healthier and preventing hair loss. Omega 3s have also been proven to alleviating skin blemishes and encouraging the production of strong collagen and elastin fibers which contributes to more youthful looking skin.
