Digital senior Ali Mundan prepares for a hit as communications junior Chantel McMillan spikes the ball over the net at a game against Santaluces High School on Sept. 26.

The Dreyfoos girls volleyball team took on Santaluces High School on Sept. 26, in the last home game of the season. The team commemorated the five seniors with Senior Night before the start of the match. A pregame celebration honored communications seniors Mariana Pesquera and Alex Huynh, visual seniors Fiona Salsich and Courtney Root, and digital senior Ali Munden. The small occasion featured heartfelt messages from juniors on the team and bouquets of flowers for the future graduates. The team carried momentum from their previous matches into the highly contested game. Dominating performances from seniors and the rest of the team capped off the emotional night as the Jaguars went on to win the game 3-0.

“I think it was the best we’ve ever played and the hardest we’ve ever worked to get a win,” Huynh said.

The team captured a 25-21 victory in the first set after multiple lead changes. The second set was even closer at 25-23. After a quick lead the Jaguars cooled down and allowed the Chiefs to stage an attempted comeback. In the end a 25-16 sweet victory only added to the already heightened emotions of Senior Night.

“It’s sort of weird being a senior because for the past three years we always looked up to [graduated seniors] and they sort of always seemed bigger than us. Now it’s us [being the seniors],” Munden said.

Players attributed the slow start of the game to mixed emotions but were able to overcome and contribute to the team effort.

“I thought I did a lot better towards the end when I got my confidence back and when I wasn’t so scared about it being Senior Night,” Salsich said.
