Communications senior Naomi Kelly (L-R) runs along visual senior Heather Hart at the track and field team’s first meet of the season. The meet took place at The Benjamin School and some of the events such as the field events were cancelled due to the rain.

Amid dark clouds the Dreyfoos track and field team made their way to The Benjamin School in Palm Beach Gardens on Feb. 23. This meet was not only the first meet of the season but also the first meet for many new team members.

“I think the team really came together this meet,” communications senior and team captain Naomi Kelly said. “For many people it was there first time running their given event.”

Soon after the last runners for the 4x800m race, which is the first event, had finished, a downpour forced the other races to be postponed. After all athletes were under cover for a while, the rain turned to a light drizzle allowing for the meet to continue. Though most running events went on, all field events such as shot put, discus, and long jump which were cancelled due to the rain.

“It was not an ideal situation but we still stood in the rain and cheered each other on,” Kelly said.

The boys 800m races had just ended when event organizers called the meet due to time constraints. Many runners were not able to compete in their events due to the meet ending unexpectedly.

“[The] meet was memorable mainly due to the torrential downpour,” dance senior and team co-captain Paul Rispoli said. “It was a good meet overall and most of the team got to experience competing in track and field for the first time”
