On Aug. 19, the Lady Jags Varsity (V) Volleyball team began its season, eventually advancing to regional semifinals. Their season ended Oct. 25, with an overall record of 15-4, district score of 2-0, and a rank of 118th in the state.  In the final game, they played against Mater Lakes Academy, losing 1-3. With the close of the season, The Muse interviewed two players on their thoughts of how their year went.

Q: You’ve had a lot of success this year: how are you feeling about that? And as the season ends, what are your hopes moving forward, and what moments have stood out to you the most so far?

A: “I’m super happy about how this season went. I’m really proud of everybody who played this season. I would say my hopes have all been fulfilled. I really wanted us to get as far as we possibly could, which is great. We’ve gotten farther than we ever had in Dreyfoos history.”

Q: How do you feel about the evolution of not just yourself on the team, but the team in general?

A: “We’ve definitely evolved so much. Dreyfoos has never been really known for sports, so when we started getting better at volleyball and getting new people who were great,  we grew a lot in depth on the team of how many players we have and the skill level. I think everybody was definitely surprised that a school of the arts was good at sports.”

Q: Do you think being directly on varsity rather than on JV impacted your performance on the court?

A: “Yeah, I think 100%. It definitely helped me for this year because last year, being able to practice with everyone that would be on the squad this year helped me connect with them and be more cohesive on the court.”

Q: How do you feel as a sophomore, you’ve been handed such a big leadership role, and how do you think you’re going to continue with it for the rest of the time on the volleyball team through junior and senior year?

A: “Yeah, when Tora got hurt, I was told that I was going to be captain, and at first, I was surprised for sure. And then I really realized, like, I needed to step up as a leader on the court and make sure everyone was comfortable with me showing that leadership on the court, and it’s definitely going to help me next year and my senior year to be a better captain.”
