Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and author Tyehimba Jess reads selections from his book “Olio” to students. “Olio” features the stories of black entertainers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Jess presented a series of five syncopated sonnets on twins Millie and Christine McKoy, who were some of the characters. “As a creative writer, I have never seen anything presented in the way he did. He presented concrete poetry as a body, rather than just a piece of literature,” communications junior Elise Nau said. “He didn’t tell the stories of others; he embodied them.”

Although there are seven days left until Spirit Week begins, seniors already came to class in costume on Friday, Jan. 18, for Senior Citizen Day. Wrapped up in bathrobes and accompanied by canes, seniors emulated the styles of their elders to show enthusiasm for the Class of 2019. “My inspiration for my outfit was taken from my aunts,” communications senior Sydney Greenspan said. “It was an opportunity for me and my boyfriend to dress up for what we hope to look like in the future, or at least on my part.”

Their costumes depicted pop culture icons Cardi B and Offset, winning the costume contest. “So I guess I have always been a pretty big Cardi fan,” Mona said. “I have always loved her, and I wanted to be something funny and different which is usually her, which is why I brought the baby, and it kind of just worked out.”
