College Fair: Opening doors, inspiring students

Preparing for college can seem like a daunting task, but the Dreyfoos College Fair, which came to the gym on Oct. 8, helped students soothe their fears. This year Dreyfoos parents Julie Dolce and Lauren Jorgensen were the co-chairs of the college fair.

“[The college fair] provides opportunity for students to meet with college representatives and alumni and learn about various colleges,” Ms. Dolce said.

The fair has occurred for the last three years. Ms. Dolce and former chair Kelly Kupi started it. Mrs. Kupi believed that Dreyfoos students, especially freshmen, needed a way to communicate with colleges and get advice.

“Freshmen and sophomores should attend because they’re the ones who will benefit the most,” Mrs. Jorgensen said. “It’s an early opportunity. For example, a dream college can say you need three years of foreign language. As a 9th or 10th grader you [have the chance to fulfill those requirements], unlike a senior.”

This year the fair showcased over 70 colleges. Harvard, Columbia, Princeton and other prestigious colleges were present.

“[Students] get one-on-one conversations with admission officers,” Ms. Dolce said. “[The fair] gives students and parents an ability to speak with college representatives. Students get to have their specific questions answered.”

The fair consisted of rows of college booths that were manned by college alumni or representatives. Students were able to introduce themselves and get information about the college. Many booths offered educational pamphlets, and the opportunity to sign up to mailing lists to receive information about specific colleges.

“I’m very impressed by the students tonight,” University of Virginia alumna Patricia Leonard said. “They had great questions. [The fair had] a big turnout and it was a great success.”
